I use Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom Tablet for all my digital work, but I also love to work traditionally. I use a lot of<a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-cotman-watercolors-sets/" target="_blank"> watercolors</a>, <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/sakura-pigma-micron-pen/" target="_blank">micron pens</a>, dip ink, and <a href="http://painting.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=painting&cdn=hobbies&tm=8&f=10&su=p284.13.342.ip_p504.6.342.ip_&tt=3&bt=8&bts=0&zu=http%3A//gan.doubleclick.net/gan_click%3Flid%3D41000613802551081%26pubid%3D21000000000628399%26adurl%3Dhttp%3A//www.dickblick.com/products/pentel-arts-color-brush-pens/" target="_blank">ink brush pens</a>! Plus just good ‘ol <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/tombow-mono-professional-drawing-pencils/" target="_blank">pencils</a>. It takes a lot of experimenting to find what really works for you, so just try whatever you can get your hands on. I am assuming you want to get into Character Animation? Getting accepted is definitely a lot of hard work! I went to local community colleges and took life drawing courses during the week after school (I was still in high school) , and on weekends. Plus I got a zoo membership and drew at the zoo on Sunday mornings. Just draw as much as possible from life! Experiment with color too, that made it a lot more fun for me. Also look at accepted portfolios to see what calarts is generally looking for.
